| The Aughinish Walk 4.9km 1hr (Marked with White Arrows) From Glocca Morra B&B turn right out of the drive and pass the Old Petrol Station on your right. Behind the Petrol Station you will see an old cottage and outbuilding that is reported to be inhabited as late as 1975. Carefully cross the road to gain access to the road on the other side. Follow this road for the Aughinish loop walk. The walk is down a winding track lined with Ash, Thorn and large Wild Cherry. Travel on past the Unicorn's Rest where the hedges are full in late summer with wild raspberry, elderberry, blackberry and the small but sweet tasting strawberry. There are some fine Oaks along the road and as you travel uphill, fuchsia bushes are in abundance. As the road winds back towards the Main Road (R463) there are glimpses of Holy Island and towards Scarriff you might be able to see Caher Castle, which in 1880, belonged to the sons of Rory McNamara. Nearby stands the ruin of Caislean Ban, the White Castle that was destroyed by the Government in 1827 for being an illegal distillery. At the Main Road carefully cross and turn left in the direction of Killaloe. To your right is Caher Mountain with the Slieve Bernagh Mountains running to Moylussa, which is the tallest mountain in County Clare. (532m) You'll pass the old Ballybran National School on your left and also the Church of St. Molua built in 1846. Here you will see some spectacular views of Lough Derg with Killaloe in the distance. Across Lough Derg are the Arra Mountains of Tipperary with Tountinna being the most prominent. Atop Tountinna are communication towers and to the left you may see the Millennium Cross on a lower mountain. Continue on and you'll find yourself back at Glocca Morra B&B. |
| The Tinerana Walk 5.8km 1.5hrs (Marked with Green Arrows) From Glocca Morra B&B turn right out of the drive and pass the Old Petrol Station on your right. Turn right at the next road adjacent to the Petrol Station where you will see an old cottage and outbuilding that is reported to be inhabited as late as 1975. Follow this road up a very steep hill under the Elm and Ash Trees. As you are approaching the summit of the road you will see the entrance to a reputed old quarry that has been part of a local controversy. Continuing on you'll come to a clearing where you can view Lough Derg in all of its glory and the Arra Mountains of Tipperary with Tountinna being the tallest. Continue on and at the junction turn left descending to Tinerana. Here you connect with the Main Road (R463) where you should carefully cross the road and turn left in the direction of Scarriff. On your right is Tinerana estate with 300 acres of woodlands, grazing, private homes and Tinerana House built in the 19th Century. You will pass the old Protestant Church on your right, which is now a private residence. Continue on and you will enter into Ogonnelloe. You'll pass the Ogonnelloe National School on your right and continue on where Glocca Morra B&B is 1/2km on your left. |
| The Ballyloughnane Walk 11km 2.5hrs (Marked with Green and then Orange Arrows) From Glocca Morra B&B turn right out of the drive and pass the Old Petrol Station on your right. Turn right at the next road adjacent to the Petrol Station where you will see an old cottage and outbuilding that is reported to be inhabited as late as 1975. Follow this road up a very steep hill under the Elm and Ash Trees. As you are approaching the summit of the road you will see the entrance to a reputed old quarry that has been part of a local controversy. Continuing on you'll come to a clearing where you can view Lough Derg in all of its glory and the Arra Mountains of Tipperary with Tountinna being the tallest. Continue on and at the junction turn right following the road to St. Mary's Church. Cross the road and follow to the next junction and turn left. Travel downhill towards Lough Derg where there are fine views of the Lough with the Arra Mountains rising on the Tipperary side with Tountinna being the tallest, and the Silvermine and Slieve Felim Mountains in the distance with Keeper Hill being its tallest peak. Turn left at the Piper's Inn, which is now closed and continue on until you are on the Main Road (R463). Carefully cross the road and turn left in the direction of Scarriff. On your right is Tinnerana estate with 300 acres of woodlands, grazing, private homes and Tinnerana House built in the 19th Century. You will pass the old Protestant Church on your right, which is now a private residence. Continue on and you will enter into Ogonnelloe. You'll pass the Ogonnelloe National School on your right and continue on where Glocca Morra B&B is 1/2km on your left. |
