Glocca Morra B&B Craggaunowen, Knappogue Castle and Quin Abbey

Craggaunowen 'The Living Past' tells the story of the arrival
of the Celts in Ireland and the many changes they wrought
upon daily life. Their impact is evidenced in the creation of
new tribal lake dwellings, farming and hunting methods which
are explained by the costumed animators.
A major feature of the visit, is a Crannog (meaning 'young
tree’) which is a reconstructed lake-dwelling of a type found
in Ireland during the Iron Age and Early Christian periods.
Though some homesteads were inhabited during the Late
Bronze Age and in some cases, were still being occupied as
late as the 17th century

Knappogue Castle is located in a truly picturesque setting,
surrounded by the tranquil landscapes and rolling hills of
Clare. Beautiful Victorian and Walled Gardens surround the
Castle where one can relax or enjoy a peaceful stroll.
The Castle was built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara, and is a
magnificent example of a medieval tower house.
It has a long and varied history ~ from a battle field to a
dwelling place.

Quin Abbey founded in 1433 housed many Franciscan
monks over the centuries until 1820 when the last monk,
Father Hogan, whose burial site can be visited in the Abbey,
died. This Abbey along with the 13th century Gothic style
church lying adjacent to it attracts many visitors who come to
climb the spiral staircase and explore how the monks lived
and view the surrounding countryside.

Directions

From Glocca Morra, turn left out of the drive towards
Scarriff. Entering Tuamgraney, turn left at the "island" on the
R352 and follow in the direction of Ennis. There will be a
village sign for Tulla and continue on the main road for just
over 1 km and turn left at the signpost for Craggaunowen
and Knappogue Castle. This sign has a brown background.
This is the R462 to Kilkishen. Follow this road and you will
see a lovely old thatched roof cottage on your right hand
side. Follow through Kilkishen and 4km (1.8 miles) there is a
sign to turn right to Craggaunowen. This turnoff sneaks up
on you! This road is the R469. Follow this road and there
will be a signpost to turn right to Craggaunowen. Follow this
road and the entrance drive to the car park is on your left
hand side.
After Craggaunowen, turn right out of the car park and follow
to the junction. Turn right on the R469 to Knappogue Castle.
The entrance gates will be on your left hand side. The car
park is through the gates on the other side of the castle.
After Knappogue Castle, drive back to the R469 and turn left
out of the gates in the direction of Quin. Upon entering Quin
you can park on the side of the road and you'll see the
entrance walk to Quin Abbey. This is a lovely town with
some great pubs and a perfect place to stop for lunch.
After Quin Abbey, drive back in the direction past
Knappogue Castle to the junction of the R462. Turn left and
continue on to the junction of the R352. Turn right in the
direction of Scarriff and upon entering Tuamgraney turn right
after the "island" on the R463 in the direction of Killaloe.
Continue on the road to bring you back to Glocca Morra!
